Did you know that if your student misses 10% or more of the school year for any reason, they are considered chronically absent?
Our school and district are committed to responding to the high levels of chronic absenteeism we are facing as a district. According to the Colorado Department of Education, a student is chronically absent if they miss 10% or more of the days enrolled during the school year for any reason (excused or unexcused absences). The district is committed to communicating swiftly with your family if there are attendance concerns for your student. Here are some key points with respect to attendance interventions:
School-Level Interventions
| Tardy (less than 10 minutes) = T | Student assigned 30-minute detention and sent to class |
| Tardy (more than 10 minutes) = UP (Unexcused Present) | Student assigned 60-minute detention and sent to class |
| Unexcused Absence = U |
Student assigned 90 minute detention and sent to class. An automated call will go out to guardians for each class period missed. |
*If students continue to accrue unexcused absences or missed tardy detentions they could be put on an EHS Attendance Plan. Within the framework of this plan, we work with your student to create attendance improvement goals within a specified time frame and set out a sequence to progress monitor those goals. This plan might also include interventions like Saturday School, In-School Detention, and loss of privileges to attend various school activities/events.
District-Level Interventions
| At 40 class period absences | CCSD will communicate with your family in an emailed letter that your student has an attendance concern. |
| At 60 class period absences | CCSD will communicate with your family in an emailed letter on the requirement to provide documentation (medical/legal) to excuse future absences. Student and family problem-solving meeting required with your student’s attendance dean. |
| If absences continue: | The CCSD truancy office will contact your family to initiate the truancy process. |
Did you know that if you provide medical documentation when your student misses school to see a mental health/medical professional, the absence will be coded as medical (coded as ‘M’)? Medically documented absences will not count toward the thresholds that the district monitors for attendance letters.
See the Cherry Creek Attendance Policy and Process website for more information for CCSD district attendance policies.
